James Carlton Winston Sr., 83, of Kearneysville, passed away on July 11, 2023, at his residence. He was born on March 21, 1940, in Frederick, Maryland.
Mr. Winston was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Kearneysville and retired from the Board of Education in Jefferson County.
He enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing, and was a horse owner who spent many hours at the racetrack.
Mr. Winston is survived by his brother, Wellington Brown; two sisters, Mary A. Woodfork and Wanda Frederick; six sons, Michael Carey (Lori), James C. Winston Jr. (Amy), Charles Winston (Shari), Roy Winston (Lori), Larry Winston (Kasey), and Robert McDowell (Nikki); six daughters, Lillian Williams, Debra McCallum (Paul), Carolyn Jones (John), Thelma Grant (Delancy), Carol Morris (Dennis), and Kristine Hosby (Frank); numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and a special grandson and caregiver, Daniel Stone.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years, Thelma W. Winston; two sisters, Betty Winston and Frances Ferguson; brother-in-law, William Woodfork; son, Darrell L. Winston; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2023, at Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood, with Pastor Tyrone Lockett officiating.
Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the chapel.
